Iceland Parenting Glossary
Plain-language definitions for the Icelandic systems, agencies, and terms that every parent here needs to understand — from fæðingarorlof to Þjóðskrá.
Note: Definitions are based on publicly available official sources. Rules change — always confirm current requirements with the relevant authority.
Fæðingarorlof
Parental LeaveIceland's statutory parental leave system, governed by Act no. 144/2020. Each parent receives 6 months of independent leave, plus 6 months that can be shared, totalling up to 24 months per family. Payments are administered by Vinnumálastofnun with a monthly cap of 900,000 ISK (2026).
Leikskóli
PreschoolIceland's public preschool system for children aged 1–6. Funded and operated by municipalities. Application windows and waiting list processes vary — in Reykjavík, a lottery-based intake runs in October for the following year.
Dagmamma
ChildminderA registered home-based childminder licensed by the municipality. An alternative to leikskóli, particularly for infants under 18 months. Dagmammas operate under municipal supervision and typically follow similar subsidy rules.
Vinnumálastofnun
Directorate of LabourThe government agency that administers parental leave payments (fæðingarorlof), processes eligibility, and sets payment schedules. Applications are submitted via Ísland.is. All official payment amounts and eligibility decisions come from Vinnumálastofnun.
Heilsuvera
National Health PortalIceland's official health portal for booking prenatal and postnatal appointments, viewing health records, and communicating with your Heilsugæsla (primary care centre). Available in Icelandic and English at heilsuvera.is.
Þjóðskrá
Registers IcelandThe national civil registry. Responsible for child birth registration, national ID (kennitala) assignment, and name approval. The Personal Names Committee (Mannanafnanefnd) operates under Þjóðskrá and reviews names not on the pre-approved list.
Persónuvernd
Data Protection AuthorityThe Icelandic Data Protection Authority, which oversees compliance with Act no. 90/2018 (GDPR implementation). The supervisory body for personal data handling in Iceland.
Mannanafnanefnd
Personal Names CommitteeThe official body that reviews and approves baby names not already on Iceland's pre-approved name list (Mannanafnaskrá). Governed by Lög um mannanöfn nr. 45/1996. Decisions are made based on Icelandic language rules and cultural compatibility.
Heilsugæsla
Primary Healthcare CentreYour local primary care centre, assigned based on your registered home address. Provides prenatal appointments, postnatal checks, infant health monitoring, and vaccination schedules. Your first point of contact for healthcare during pregnancy.
Ísland.is
